Fizz Weather HD for iPad

Fizz Weather HD is one of the latest weather apps for iPad to hit the App Store; released just over a week ago. Fizz Weather itself has been around for years on various mobile platforms and the iPhone version has been in the App Store since 2008, shortly after the store launched.

I always liked Fizz Weather back in Windows Mobile days and also enjoy their iPhone app – so I was keen to give their new HD version for the iPad a look, and I’ve been using it for the last several days.

Notes

Here are some of Fizz Weather HD’s key features:

Fizz Weather provides detailed weather information for over 78,000 cities worldwide.

See detailed weather reports for up to 15 days, with wind speed, visibility, barometer reading, humidity, UV levels and sunrise/sunset times too.

Global forecast maps are provided with animated radar loops and animated satellite maps (radar is US only at the moment). View a map of your chosen location with weather superimposed. Pinch and zoom maps for a more detailed view.

Detailed charts are available to show you temperature, precipitation probability, rainfall, humidity and wind speed all for differing durations, including hourly for 12hrs and 48hours and for the next 15 days too.

US weather warnings will show you detailed information about alerts and warnings in your region.

Information provided includes high and low temperatures (C or F), wind speed and direction (km, miles, knots, m/s or beaufort), precipitation probability, comfort level, humidity, visibility, UV levels and the barometer reading (Millibars or Inches). Touch the i to add cities or change your settings.

Highlights

Fizz Weather HD offers a very clean main screen – showing just the city name, current temperature, and a very short summary of current conditions, e.g ‘Overcast. Mild.’ As with all good weather apps, you can track weather in multiple cities – and you just swipe left and right to see the cities you’ve added via settings.

The app’s UI is simple and elegant – and it’s easy to get around and see all of its information from its single main page. Weather, Charts, and Maps are the three detailed information sections – all reachable with a single tap in the bottom nav bar.

Each section can be showed / hidden and expanded / collapsed with single taps – so it’s very easy and quick to drill down a little or step back out of any of the information sets, to view forecast details for individual days or details of a particular map for instance.

In the Maps section, there’s a slick slider control to move through the different maps on offer.

It’s easy to share information from nearly any view within the app as well – via email, Facebook, or Twitter.

The app lets you set your own background image. I realize this is just a little nicety type feature – but I find it a very likeable one. I really enjoy being able to set a gorgeous photo of Austin as the backdrop for the app.

Lowlights

This app probably doesn’t present enough variety and depth of weather information to satisfy those who want a real heavyweight weather app.

Other than that, I’ve seen no real flaws with the app.

Overall

For me, Fizz Weather HD is a great combination of a simple and elegant interface with a strong range of weather information. If you want just minimal information at a glance, you’ve got it. If you want more detail, it’s easy to get to quickly. And you can make it your own a bit with the ability to add a custom background.

I’ve always loved the Weather HD app for iPad, but Fizz Weather HD has now become my joint favorite iPad weather app – and the one I’ll go to whenever I need more detailed weather info.

Here’s an App Store link for Fizz Weather HD: it’s priced at $0.99.
